A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed pending a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in total adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
